Waldorf Astoria Platte Island 2024 – 14th to 21st April
The exquisite Waldorf Astoria Platte Island recently opened its doors, catering to scuba divers, snorkellers, beach lovers, and keen fly fishers. The guides have been chomping at the bit to get on the water and see what the fishery has to offer after rumours of big GTs, an abundance of permit, and some hefty triggerfish.
The time finally arrived for anglers eager to get onto the flats. Both guides went their separate ways, one after bonefish with Mr. Park and the other after anything that would eat the fly. A lovely GT on a ray swam across his path. A short cast and one strip resulted in a notorious eat and aggressive run, taking him well into his backing. Fifteen minutes later, a spectacular 88cm GT was landed, a first for Mr. Park.
After a short tour of the other end of the atoll, we jumped on the pole to see what the flats had to offer. After a short while, we had another 88cm GT for the day. The chase for a permit and triggerfish was now on.
John, a new addition to our team, joined us for the next three days, maintaining the momentum of our successful fishing. We encountered numerous fish, made several casts, and managed to catch some magnificent fish. Our primary target was the elusive permit, for which Platte Island renowned. They proved to be quite a challenge this time, constantly spitting out the fly. However, our perseverance paid off when we were rewarded with two stunning yellow margin triggerfish, measuring 53 and 57.5cm respectively. These were truly the fish of a lifetime.
That is a wrap on our first couple of days fishing on Platte, with some great catches coming to hand and many more opportunities.
