The River Anton is a wonderful chalkstream flowing into the River Test just above Stockbridge. It features a great variety of wide open shallows, fast weedy sections and deep holes. The river offers some wonderful trout and grayling fishing with both dry flies and nymphs throughout the season.
The river flows crystal clear for almost the whole season making it a wonderful sight-fishery where you can target specific fish. There is a good wild population of both brown trout and grayling with some supplement stocking. Each year anglers find some very large trout and grayling, though they can be testing at times the rewards are great.
Each beat offers fishing for one or two rods, with access to small simple huts for breaks in the day. There are four beats spread over 2.2 km of main river that can be explored. Each part of the river has its own character and numerous places for fish to find. It is also possible to arrange guiding, tackle hire and catering.
If you are looking for some late season trout fishing on the chalkstreams then there is still some great availability. The cost for the River Anton in September and early October is £266 per person.
The fishing is easily accessed with its relative proximity to London. It is under an hour’s drive from Junction 12 on the M25. And just over an hour on the train from central London.
September on the chalkstreams is one of our favourite times. As the weather begins to cool from the hotter summer months and the air gets a little damper the insect life springs into action. From mid-morning through to mid-afternoon small olives trickle off the surface, bringing the fish up. The evenings see the continuation of the summer sedge hatches and often one can see the aggressive splashy rises.
