In the heart of Patagonian trout country, El Encuentro Lodge enjoys some of the world’s finest trout fishing. We enjoyed this update from the lodge which recounts highlights from the recent spring season (which runs from early November to late December) through the eyes of the guides. Read on to find out what it’s like to fish these lovely waters.

Among the guides’ favourite spring fishing spots, Selba chooses Rivadavia Spring Creek in Los Alerces National Park. The water, he says, stays clear amidst all the snow melt and rain; you get to sight fish all day with dry droppers and dry flies while surrounded by the incredible colours of the snow capped mountains and plants around you in this valley.

Ask Fede what comes to mind in terms of spring fishing and he lists his highlights as:
- The very few people, particularly in Los Alerces National Park.
- The level of the water is high and cold, so floating days are at their best.
- Wading the small little creeks is superb since the pools are full of water and the current keeps fish healthy and moving.
- The fish are getting active after spawning season, this might make them look thin and long, but they are actually super feisty, hungry and active.
- There are more chances of catching brown trout.
- At Brook Trout Base Camp the fishing is varied; brown trout are active in the flats, rainbow trout are super colourful coming out of spawning and brook trout fishing is really productive.
- Towards the end of spring, you have the dragon fly hatch that is super fun and exciting fishing.

This extract sums up very well what a spring trip can produce at El Encuentro:
A long time group of friends had a fabulous week with us in mid-December. Among remarkable catches, Jeff landed an impressive 22-inch rainbow trout in the Corcovado River after a patient and strategic effort. At Lago Dos, anglers reeled in massive rainbows ranging from 25 to 35 inches, with Dan catching a stunning 22-inch brook trout. Lago Tres produced a memorable 27-inch brown trout for Frank, while Sonny celebrated a 29-inch rainbow with a victory cigar. The largest catch of the trip was a 35-inch female rainbow, making for an unforgettable moment. The adventure continued at Valle del Carrileufu, where anglers enjoyed incredible dry fly action on the Carrileufu River and spectacular hatches on the Rivadavia River.
