The New Zealand fly fishing season has just come to a close and we’ve had a round up from this superb South Island Lodge.
Here’s what Scottie Little, manager and head guide at Eleven Cedar Lodge had to say:
‘Mother nature threw all types of weather at us this season, but the helicopter kept us nimble and delivered phenomenal days.‘
His detailed report is here:
The New Zealand angling season has come to an end at Cedar Lodge, and we’re enjoying cooler mornings and autumn showing itself in the changing leaves. Mother nature threw it all at us this season which made for some unsettled weather patterns, which isn’t uncommon at South Island fishing lodges. Any challenging conditions were met with ease thanks to the flexibility of the helicopter and the expertise of our guiding team. The crew know the waterways well, and did a fantastic job getting guests on fish.
Due to the varying weather and temperatures, the cicada season was slightly inconsistent. Fish were still coming to terrestrials but we did not see the run-of-the mill terrestrial activity. Because of the weather, our average number of fish caught per day was down to about four, but when they’re averaging four to five pounds and guests are getting daily opportunities at six to eight pound fish, even a tough day is a day to remember at Cedar Lodge. Every day was polished off with delicious cocktails and some great food served by our lodge chef, Gordon.
Wanaka, a beautiful resort town just 50 minutes down the road, kept any non-anglers happy with golf, mountain biking, wine tasting, and shopping throughout the season.
Space for the 2025 season is already filling fast at this lovely lodge, so if you would like more information on fly fishing in New Zealand and at Eleven Cedar Lodge in particular, please contact Peter McLeod or Alex Jardine or call our office on +44(0)1980 847389.
