Bucket list sites to add to a Mexican fishing trip
• San Cristobal de las Casas – This beautiful city has plenty to explore, including a colourful market, the cathedral and jade museum. Many of the Tzotzil Maya communities in the area still demonstrate a wide variety of customs and believes expressed in the traditions of both pagan and Christian origin.
• Palenque – The route between San Cristobal and Palenque goes via the gorgeous waterfalls of Agua Azul and lush jungle scenery. Palenque itself is one of the most important sites of the ancient Mayan civilization and is home to some beautiful architecture, exquisite sculptures and carvings.
• Campeche – This vibrant town is full of naval history and Spanish baroque architecture. Over the last few years many of the historic downtown buildings have been restored making it a photographer’s delight.
• Uxmal – Uxmal is another word heritage site where famous locations include the magician pyramid, the quadrangle of the nuns and the governor’s palace. From Uxmal it’s an easy hop to Merida which is the Yucatan’s capital city and home to stunning architecture, lovely parks and delicious gastronomy.
• Chichen Itza – Around 60 AD, Chichen Itxa was one of the largest and most prominent Maya cities. Recently declared one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’ it is one of the best-preserved Maya sites in the Yucatan peninsula. Among famous landmarks here are the temple of Kukulkan and the platform of the skulls.
