Los Roques – Exceptional wade fishing for Bonefish

The flats and beaches of Los Roques are some of the most sought-after bonefish fisheries on the planet. If you like to experience the most exciting environments for large tailing bonefish, and to cast to minnow munching marine marauders while all the time wading azure water flats or beaches, then there are few places that can compare to Los Roques.

But there is more to Los Roques than bonefish.  Tarpon abound when the bait fish are “in town”, and are found in sizes up to 100+lb.  Juvenile tarpon inhabit the mangrove lagoons.  And the elusive permit is sometimes to be found hovering around the flats.  In addition, there is a wide variety of other species, all of which will gladly inhale a fly.  For those with heavier tackle, the offshore fishing is second to none.

Los Roques was always one of the top three saltwater fisheries on the planet, but over the last few years, with US tensions with Venezuela, it has slightly slipped into the memory banks and been passed over in favour of other fisheries in the Caribbean.  As a result however, the fishery has experienced almost no pressure for the last five years, so the fish have seen very few fishermen and fewer flies.  As a result, the fishing has gone from strength to strength and those who have ventured out have returned with stories of great bonefish, monster tarpon, large Caribbean triggerfish and even parrotfish, all appearing in their rod sights.

Why Alexander wants to fish Los Roques

Los Roques holds a special place in my fishing memory bank. Apart from being one of the most idyllic spots on the planet, its unique ‘pancake’ flats offer bonefishing experiences second to none. Moreover, it was where I hosted the first of many Castaway Flyfishing trips, going back to the beginning of this century. And if that were not sufficient, it is the spot where I landed my first permit.

I love the variety of fishing that Los Roques offers – the resident tarpon cruising in and around the mangroves, the wily permit feeding on the coral flats, the mega-tarpon chasing baitfish within a stone’s throw of the village itself and its posadas, and even trigger fish acting as cousins of the permit. And then there is the superb blue water fishing … enough said.

Finally, there is nothing like the tranquillity of the village of Gran Roque. Everything is within walking distance, there are no roads and therefore no cars – just a few beachside bars and a growing number of delightful posadas and restaurants.
