In recent years, Estancia San Jose on the Rio Grande has served as a private residence. However, it is now available for rods wishing to fish the middle reaches of one of the world’s best sea trout rivers.
San Jose Lodge is a 24,000-acre working estancia around an hour from Rio Grande. The river is only a five-minute drive from the lodge and is home to some of the most productive waters on this part of the Rio Grande. It is positioned just upstream from Aurelia Lodge, and the fishing extends all the way to the Chilean border, where Cameron Lodge takes over. Despite this, it is still considered part of the river’s middle reaches and offers a unique and intriguing location.
San Jose Lodge is a haven for fishing enthusiasts and the ideal for those who enjoy an intimate setting. Usually taking four rods, the lodge ensures a peaceful and comfortable stay. San Jose Lodge has exclusive access to 12 miles of the Rio Grande on both banks, which is a huge advantage as they can rest and manage water as they see fit. The lodge is ideal for intact groups.
The Fishing
Unlike most other lodges along the river that rotate fishing between left and right banks, San Jose guarantees uninterrupted access to 12 miles of the Rio Grande. A well-maintained road network runs along the river, allowing anglers good access to notable pools. Wading is generally easy, as the riverbed is primarily fine gravel. The limited number of anglers ensures that the water is regularly rested, which is particularly beneficial during periods of low water.
The water offers interesting twists and turns and well-known pools that hold fish throughout the season. Much of the water remains largely untouched, making it ideal for anglers who enjoy exploration.
Lunch is typically served at the main house, but there is also a riverside cabin where anglers can enjoy lunch or a barbecue during their stay. The cabin also serves as a refuge for those seeking respite during the day.
The Lodge
San Jose Lodge, is a classically styled Patagonian farmhouse and has an intimate family-style atmosphere with the added touch of warm and welcoming service, delicious chef-prepared cuisine paired with fine Argentine wines. There are five comfortable and spacious rooms with private en-suite bathrooms, and two inviting lounge rooms with fireplaces for guests to enjoy. The San Jose experience is like being a guest at a friend’s holiday house rather than being a guest at a standard fishing lodge.
The weekly programme is designed to accommodate four anglers in single occupancy rooms to ensure every angler fishes well-rested water daily. Each room is thoughtfully furnished and well-appointed with every comfort in mind. Although San Jose is geared toward fly fishing, non-anglers looking to join their partners are always welcome to visit. The estancia is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the solitude and peace of ranch life in southern Argentine Patagonia.
