Tjuonajokk Lodge, Sweden
Outstanding fly fishing in Swedish Lapland
Tjuonajokk Lodge provides access to some superb, remote water in northern Scandinavia. The lodge has developed a reputation as an outstanding grayling fishery and has begun to attract anglers worldwide. Besides trophy size grayling, the waters hold char, brown trout and northern pike.
Good variety on an untouched river system
Tjuonajokk Lodge is in Swedish Lapland, between Kiruna and Gällivare, and sits alongside the River Kaitum, one of the last untouched rivers in Sweden. What sets this system apart from others is the range of species to target and the ability to sight fish in the right conditions. In the river’s slower water you sight fish to pike, and the fast shallow riffles are full of trout and grayling. Although much of the fishing is on the River Kaitum, there are many fish-filled lakes in the surrounding area. Boats are used to explore the river system and allow for quick access to the best water for each species. On the same day, you can choose to target pike, grayling and trout.
Simple, cosy accommodation within sight of the river
The lodge comprises a mix of private cabins and rooms, all with views over the river. The wooden cabins are simple, but clean and warm. For larger groups, the new house sleeps up to 11 in double and single rooms. The house also has a sauna and lounge area. The camp has a restaurant and a small shop where you can buy gear and necessities. The accommodation is best described as simple but comfortable. All cabins have 12V electricity from solar power to run light bulbs etc. A gas heater provides you with heat if necessary.
Pristine location miles from the nearest road
One of the reasons the fishing has remained so good is the lodge’s remote position, with access via a 90 minute helicopter ride from Kiruna airport in northern Sweden. That said, it’s not difficult to reach with the total travel time from Stockholm Arlanda international airport only two and a half hours. This means that Tjuonajokk is perfectly doable as a shorter trip.
