Dogwood Lodge
Louisiana redfish in the Biloxi Marsh
Dogwood Lodge is an historic boat moored on the edge of the Biloxi Marsh and offers easy access to excellent water to target redfish.
An angler’s paradise
The Biloxi Marsh, a vast estuary network covering 210,000 acres of coastal wetlands on the eastern side of Louisiana bordering the Gulf of Mexico, is a prime destination for year-round fishing. This area, crisscrossed by bayous and canals, and dotted with lakes, bays, ponds, and lagoons, offers diverse habitats that are ideal for fishing, especially for redfish.
Fishing in the Biloxi Marsh and the broader southeastern Louisiana coast involves targeting specific waters depending on the season, weather, and water conditions. The guided trips often focus on areas ideal for shallow-water sight fishing for redfish, which are known for their challenging nature as game fish. These fish are particularly exciting to catch on the fly in shallow waters, sometimes striking near the boat, making for an exhilarating experience.
The Hopedale area, part of this vast marsh system, is especially renowned for its robust and healthy redfish population, making it a year-round fishing hotspot. The region’s ecosystem supports not only fish but also a rich variety of birdlife, alligators, turtles, sea otters, raccoons, dolphins, and many other species both above and below the water.
A well equipped retreat
Dogwood Lodge is just minutes from the Biloxi Marsh, and provides a comfortable base for anglers and non-anglers alike. The Mississippi Room on the second deck, offers a lounge area with comfortable seating, a widescreen television, and a bar, perfect for socialising. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor seating area to take in the marsh’s sights and sounds while enjoying their morning coffee or evening drink.
Accommodation comprises six private rooms named after the rivers the boat has traversed in its history. Each is furnished with two twin beds, a private bath, and an air conditioning unit. The dining room seats 12, and two open decks provide ample space to relax and enjoy the magnificent surroundings. There is internet access on the upper deck lounge area.
Southern and Cajun cuisine are highlights of the Dogwood Lodge experience. Each day includes a hot breakfast, snack lunch with soft drinks, and water on the skiff, and appetisers and dinner back at the lodge. The bar is a great place to unwind and share stories of the day. Guests need to bring their own alcoholic beverages if they wish to have them on the skiffs, as the lodge cannot legally provide alcohol for off-vessel consumption.
Non-fishers or anglers taking a break will find the area offers a wealth of activities and attractions. In New Orleans, visitors can enjoy history and heritage tours, the city’s renowned cuisine, the vibrant nightlife on Bourbon Street, museums, shopping, professional sports events, festivals, and much more.
