For the start of the week the river carried a little colour from the previous rise but the water soon cleared which made for some wonderful technical fishing conditions. Lower water can always make for more challenging conditions but throughout the week those who fished with a carful and thoughtful approach caught plenty of fish. It has been good to see that there is still fresh fish being caught this late in the season. This week the temperature dropped on some evenings but not as much as usual for this late in the season. It is predicted that next week it is going to get colder which can mean the start of the morning session can be a little slow until the day warms up. What is exciting about this colder period of the season is the opportunity to catch some of the very large male fish that become increasingly territorial as we move towards the end of the season.

Estancia Maria Behety March 22 – 29
With no rainfall the water remained low but steady and had slight colour for the first part of the week but soon cleared. The slower flow in some of the pools made fishing technical but interesting as presentation was important. The weather was generally dry and typical for the season, and at no point during the week did it get especially cold which can be the case at this late in the season, but we expect that this will change next week.
Flies and tactics
Smaller flies have still been most effective other than when the light started to drop. EMB (weighted and unweighted), green machine, girdle bug, small salmon doubles, chartreuse leeches, sunray shadow, black leeches in the evening.
A mix of skagit and scandi lines were used throughout the week, depending on the wind and how deep we needed to fish. Throughout the week we fished a range of tips from type 3 up to T20 depending on the pool and how active the fish were at the time.

Kau Tapen March 15th – 22nd
We’ve just wrapped up the eleventh week of fishing at Kau Tapen, hosting a fantastic group of international anglers from the UK and the U.S. It’s been another week of learning, adapting, and pursuing the sea trout on both the Rio Grande and Menendez rivers.
Since the water rise two weeks ago, levels have steadily dropped, returning the river to its lowest point of the season. Combined with the cooler temperatures typical for this time of year, fishing presented its challenges, but that only made each success more rewarding. With temperatures fluctuating throughout the day we found that adapting to the present conditions was the key. We constantly adjusted our fly and line selection to match the conditions. This kept the guides and rods engaged and felling like they earned everyone of their fish.
Despite the tougher conditions, we landed some incredible sea trout, with the largest weighing in at 19 pounds. The variety of techniques we used, from delicate nymphs to large streamers. The river rewarded patience and persistence, and as it always does, offered unforgettable moments along the way.
