Early Season Fly Fishing on the Test.
April marks the much-anticipated start of the chalk stream fly-fishing season. After months of waiting, anglers return to the River Test with a sense of excitement, wondering what the new season will bring. Will conditions be settled? Will the hatches come on strong? Will the trout be rising freely?
Aardvark McLeod is delighted to offer exclusive early-season fishing on the River Test, with limited availability from April 13–20 (1 to 4 rods available) and additional spaces in the second week of May. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy world-class fly fishing on one of England’s most celebrated rivers, just as the season gets underway.

Spring Hatches & Prime Fishing Conditions
In April, the river is full of promise. Large Dark Olives dominate the early-season hatches, providing consistent dry-fly action as trout eagerly rise to feed. As the month progresses and temperatures climb, the arrival of the Grannom caddis transforms the river, bringing a flurry of surface activity through the middle weeks.
By late April and into May, Hawthorn flies begin to make an appearance, their unmistakable black bodies and long legs dancing in the breeze. This hatch, though unpredictable, can produce electrifying dry-fly fishing on the right day—especially when a gentle breeze carries them onto the water, triggering aggressive takes from hungry trout.

With luck, April will bring settled conditions and no sign of the dreaded North-Easterly winds, allowing anglers to experience the River Test at its best.
