Located on the East coast, the Jökla is one of Iceland’s newest salmon fisheries and also one of its success stories. Much in the vain of the East and West Ranga, Jokla is a river that has been carefully nurtured which after years of hard work has really come to fruition. Last year was a fabulous season for Jökla and its tributaries. A final tally of 1,163 salmon, a lively and contented lodge, and a river that truly showed its potential when allowed to run clear for most of the summer.

The season began in late June with an excellent run of two sea winter salmon, followed by an exceptional influx of grilse that continued for much of the summer. The fishing started strong, with weekly catches of approximately 50 large salmon, and once the grilse arrived, the river was producing over 100 fish most weeks – all to just eight rods.

The early weeks saw magnificent two sea winter salmon in superb condition, and these continued to appear right through to the season’s end. Of the total catch, Jökla yielded over 200 salmon measuring 80cm or more, including three exceptional specimens exceeding 100cm. With fish of this calibre, it is clear that Jökla is gaining a reputation among Iceland’s premier large salmon rivers.
The operation is based from a full service lodge where meals and unwinding after a long day on the river takes place with eight ensuite double occupancy cabins to sleep in. There is also a full drying room with underfloor heating attached to the lodge. The whole lodge is tucked under the side of the hill overlooking the Kalda, one of Jokla’s tributaries. The lodge is conveniently located only a 45-minute drive away from Egilsstadir airport.

Although most rods have rebooked to return for 2025 we can offer the following:

2 – 6 July: 2 rods, 4 days fishing, £7,680 per rod

Upper Jökla
Being over 80 kms for water, the Jökla is in someways still being explored and reaching its potential. A while ago a fish ladder was put into one of the sets of falls allowing the salmon to move up into a further 15 – 20 kms of river and in 2025 this will now be sold as a separate fishery for just four rods. Clients will be staying in a private full service farmhouse. This is very much for those looking for a bit of an exploratory experience with a group of like minded friends.
20-24 July: 4 rods, 6 days fishing, £6,000 per rod.
Price is based on single room and shared guide including transfers from Egilsstadir.
