We’ve just received this Iceland; Reykjadalsá 2024 season from the guides on the Reykjadalsá River. It’s a great read and a good overview of the salmon, trout and char fishing on this superb river.

Reykjadalsá 2024 season report

The summer of 2024 was a truly unforgettable season on the stunning Reykjadalsá River. With a late snow storm just before the season and plenty of rain during the season, the river maintained fantastic water levels throughout the summer. These elevated levels influenced how early the salmon arrived in the river. Several fresh multi winter fish were hooked and lost on fine trout tackle early in June, and by early July, good numbers of fish were already moving upstream. The high water prompted salmon early on to swiftly move through the deeper, tranquil pools of the lower river, which are known for their calm flow, and venture farther upstream to the more dynamic pools.

Exciting News: Returns from Our Broodstock Project

We anticipate the return of salmon from our broodstock project in 2025, which should enhance salmon numbers on the Reykjadalsá. This initiative aims to support the local ecosystem and provide more opportunities for anglers in our community. Exciting times are ahead as we look forward to seeing the positive impact of this project.

Trout fishing on river Reykjadalsá.

The trout fishing also exceeded expectations in 2024. The trout were well distributed throughout the river, providing plentiful opportunities for anglers. Surface fishing remained productive right up until the end of September. In addition to dry flies, nymphs, soft hackles and streamers proved to be very effective. The trout in the Reykjadalsá River are thriving, with an increase in average size compared to the last few years. The largest trout recorded measured 61cm, and many catches were around the 50cm mark.

While our main focus has been on fishing for trout and salmon, we’ve had some pleasant surprises along the way. A few stunning Arctic char have found their way onto our lines as bycatch, adding an extra layer of excitement to our recent fishing adventures.

Whether it was the excitement of landing large salmon in the upper pools or the abundance of trout throughout the river, the 2024 season on Reykjadalsá offered something special for everyone. With stunning surroundings, ample water, and impressive catches, it was a year to remember for all who fished the river.
