Charlotte Opperman, our resident ‘angling widow’, picks her top spots for a bit of beach downtime (where there’s fishing too) that even the most hardened fishermen will find hard to turn down.
Bermuda – Much more than a financial hub, this dot in the north Atlantic is a delightful sub-tropical island blessed with glorious pink sand beaches. Among top-notch accommodation options is The Rosewood, with private beach access, a wonderful ocean-front beach bar and restaurant, a plethora of pools, spa, tennis and golf. On the fishing front you can expect bonefish year-round ranging in size from six to 12lb, and between May and October jacks, barracuda, snapper and tarpon cruise the waters. ‘It’s an enjoyably eclectic mix of American, British and Caribbean – very easy for a short break from both the UK and US’.
Antigua – Hugged by 95 miles of superb coastline, a beach for every day of the year, picture perfect coves, azure blue waters, pastel washed cottages and an interesting history, Antigua is a fabulous winter sun destination. What’s more, there’s some excellent fishing here too with all four flats species and a host of other inshore suspects like jacks and snapper to target. Bonefish average three pounds with the biggest about eight pounds. There can be outrageously plentiful permit shots too, though they’re still supremely difficult to hook. With every possible amenity and activity available between the array of resorts, Antigua is ideal for entertaining the whole family. Jumby Bay or Blue Waters Hotel and Spa are great choices here. ‘I’ve only briefly touched down here but it’s definitely somewhere I look forward to exploring more fully soon’.
Seychelles – With its barefoot luxury and Robinson Crusoe style, this Indian Ocean archipelago is hard to beat for a memorable beach holiday. Alphonse Island is the place to head for the ultimate fishing/non-fishing combo. What was once an out and out fisherman’s lodge is now a slick five-star resort catering to all comers. Cleverly retaining the original island life feel – you still cycle about dodging the resident giant tortoises – it’s a proper place to relax and recharge. ‘I’ve visited Alphonse three times and it still tops my let’s go back list. Hard to put into words, it’s just got that elusive something special.’
Maldives – Scattered over 1,000 coral islands this tropical idyll is home to a collection of exquisite resorts. Famous for stilted overwater villas, glorious beaches, magnificent diving and snorkelling it’s a superb choice for a classic beach holiday. COMO Maalifushi is a wonderful resort in far south which, along with a whole host of activities and amenities, offers guided fly-fishing between December and April. ‘A picture book perfect, landed in heaven type of place. Perfect for some proper R&R’.
Kenya – Kenya’s magnificent national parks and game reserves host all of Africa’s iconic wildlife. The coast shouldn’t be overlooked either, with a collection of fabulous small hotels and beach lodges providing wonderful accommodation for couples and families. There’s saltwater fishing from Hemingways near Malindi – one of the world’s most prolific sailfish fisheries – and good sport fishing from Manda Bay in Kenya’s Lamu archipelago. Head further south down the coast, beyond Mombasa, and you’ll eventually arrive at sleepy Diani. Among the beach front properties here is the gem that is Kinonwo Kwetu. A charming spot with plenty to entertain including some excellent sailfish and marlin fishing between December and March. ‘Kenya’s allure gets stronger every time I visit – it’s easy to see why it has drawn visitors to both its wildlife reserves and beaches for decades’.
