As I am sure some of you will have read already, over the weekend Norway announced an immediate and temporary closure of 33 salmon and sea trout rivers around the country due to poor numbers of salmon returning in the early part of the season.
This closure, implemented by the Fiskeridirektoratet (Directorate of Fisheries), will last until the 5th July when it will be reviewed based on the monitoring of the fresh runs of salmon. It affects the following rivers:
Østfold: Glomma m. Aagardselva.
Agder: Tovdalselva, Otra, Mandalselva, Lygna
Rogaland: Figgjo, Hjelmelandsåna, Nordelva (Åbøelva), Vikedalselva.
Westland: Uskedalselva, Steinsdalselva, Oselva, Nærøydalselva, Sogndalselva, Daleelva, Gaula in Sunnfjorden, Nausta, Åelva and Ommedalselva, Gloppenelva, Strynselva, Hjalma.
Møre and Romsdal: Austefjordelva, Korsbrekkelva, Rauma, Eira, Surna.
Trøndelag: Orkla, Gaula, Nidelva, Stjørdalselva, Verdalselva, Steinkjerelva and Byaelva, Namsen.
We are still very much in the early stages of the closure and there are numerous discussions taking place at all levels of management from lodge owners, land owners, river boards and government. More details will come through over the coming days.
For our anglers travelling this season all have been contacted. Plans will be put in place, but it is still too early to know if some or all rivers will continue fishing from the 5th July.
It is important to note, there are many other salmon rivers in Norway that are not impacted by these closures and are still fishing with success, most notably those in the north of the country. There is also some prime weeks still available in Iceland for those looking for salmon fishing this summer, click HERE for details.
