With Peter and Olly looking after our groups of anglers in Iceland at the moment, he have a slightly early report this week. The Iceland has stuck well to its damp, cold and windy conditions, water levels have fluctuated but salmon fishing has been good. Air temperatures have remained low between 8 – 14 °C. It has remained overcast, which has been good for fishing, with some light rain to freshen things up sporadically. Whilst most of the west coast rivers are coming towards the end of their peak runs, the northern and southern rivers are moving into their prime.
Peter is currently on Laxa I Kjos with his first group. The first session went well with some nice fish landed across all the beats before the rain came. The river needed a top up and the following 24 hours brought 23 mm of rain which out the river up over 8 inches. Day two was tough as a result as the river was a little coloured, but the team persevered and winkled a few out along the edges. By the day three the river had already dropped the colour and the fishing went off as a big run of fish took advantage of the high water and moved upstream. The team landed 34 fish in the day and even the seatrout came out to play. This morning the lower river on beat 1 has had plenty of action with 2 landed and 6 lost. The high water will be ideal for our next group heading in with Olly Thompson and will be ideal for those following on in August….
The salmon total on Laxa I Kjos now stands at 435 but with with the most productive day of the season coming this week. The sea trout total is now 43. Top flies continue to be hitch tubes, Red Frances, Black Frances, Sunray Shadow, and the Valbeinn in slightly bigger sizes to counter the higher flows. The top pools have been, Kvislafoss, Bollastadabreida, Laxfoss North & South, and Fossbreida.
Nordurá has seen catches slow slightly but still 7 to 12 fish being landed per day. The river total now stands at 822 salmon for the season. The fish are still being caught in a range of sizes from smaller grilse to some lovely strong fish between 11 and 14 lbs. The top producing pools have been Eyrin, Bryggjur, Breiðan, Stokkhylsbrot and Myrkhylur and best fly patterns Sunray Shadow, Red Francis and Collie dog.
The Midfjardara is continuing to see its catches increase. Their total now stands at 506 fish for the season, with 35 salmon landed on Thursday. The majority of the fish have been between 5 and 12 lbs but larger fish are still showing. Top flies have been micro hitched tubes, Collie Dog, black sunray, and Sunray Shadow.
