The Iceland summer has continued along the lines of damp, cold and windy, but as a result the salmon fishing has remained good throughout the country. Air temperatures have remained low between 8 – 14 °C. It has remained overcast, which has been good for fishing, with some light rain to freshen things up sporadically. Most of the rivers, especially on the west coast are experiencing the peak number of their runs. Water levels have again remained pretty constant, and any warmer temperatures have been compensated with a little snow melt, with patches still showing in the mountains.
Nordurá continued with another solid week last week. The river landed a further 128 fish last week taking their total today to 783 and approximately the same as this time last year. The river is continuing to see nearly 20 salmon landed each day with the bulk of fish ranging from 5 – 8 lbs. Water levels remain at a comfortable level for this time of year. The top producing pools have been Eyrin, Bryggjur, Breiðan, Stokkhylsbrot and Myrkhylur and best fly patterns Sunray Shadow, Red Francis, Collie dog, and Haugur.
On Laxa I Kjos, as always, it has been an eventful week. Salmon catches were a little down with 62 salmon fish landed to the eight rods taking the total to 379 but with regular fish being landed in each session. The sea trout in the meadows continue to be a pull for anglers as the season’s total climbs to 35 with a healthy average of around 5 lbs. Top flies continue to be hitched Sunray shadow, Red Frances, Black Frances, Sunray Shadow, and the Haugur but all small, between size 14 and 16. The top pools have been, Kvislafoss, Bollastadabreida, Laxfoss North & South, and Fossbreida.
The Midfjardara is continuing to see its catches increase. This week they landed 113 fish taking their total to 412 fish for the season. Although many are being seen in the pools, they have been playing hard to get with their heads down running hard but yesterday they seemed to switch on with 26 fish landed. There are some stunning fish being caught and we are still seeing a high proportion of multi sea wintered fish with the biggest fish just shy of 17 lbs. Top flies have been micro hitched tubes, Collie Dog, black sunray, and Sunray Shadow. The top pools have been Brekkulækjarstrengur 1, TT, Kambsfoss, Hlíðarfoss and Túnhylur – Vesturá.
The Laxa I Adaldal in the North landed 43 fish last week taking their total 171 fish to date with the largest still being 102 cm and 23 lbs. The top flies have been Sunray shadow, Radian, Red Frances Orkeila and Black Sheep. Top pools this week have been Fosspollur, Midfosspollur, Stuarinn, Breiðan and Sjávarhola.
