The month of May is a really cool time to go fishing on South Andros Island. Here are three reasons why.
Big Numbers. As water temperatures start to climb just a bit in May, bonefish tend to spend more time in groups from a half dozen fish to hundreds of fish (literally). This makes for excellent numbers-oriented fishing. While shots at singles and doubles can certainly get your heart rate up, groups of fish are where it’s at if you’re looking for catch rate. It’s a particularly great time for folks relatively new to bonefishing because you’re going to have lots and lots of shots.
Other Species. On the other end of the spectrum…while South Andros is not a go-to ‘Grand Slam’ destination, starting in mid-May or so we start to get more shots at some ‘alternate’ flats species. Which species, you ask? Well, if you want to mix up your bonefishing trip with some chances to cast your fly at a permit or a tarpon, May is when it happens.
No Cold Fronts. OK, any weather can happen at any time, but it’s really unusual to have a cold front in May. Lots of sun and warm, humid air mean that you’re going to have plenty of classic tropical days. Don’t worry – the beer stays nice and cold!
