Saltwater Evening - At home and Abroad

Evening of Friday 5th and morning of Saturday 6th March 2010

A unique opportunity to really understand the fastest growing and often least understood area of our sport in relaxed surroundings at The Peat Spade Inn. The perfect pre-cursor to your saltwater trip or your UK bass season.

The evening and following morning is presented by Peter McLeod of Aardvark McLeod, Howard Taylor of Upstreamdryfly & Justin Anwyl of Bass-fishing.co.uk. Justin is one of the UK’s leading saltwater fly anglers, a professional saltwater guide and bass enthusiast. All three are fanatic saltwater fly fisherman with over 60 years combined fly fishing experience and they have been fortunate enough to have fly fished all over the world, literally, leading trips in search of the ultimate saltwater fly fishing experience, targeting both tropical and cold water species.

Friday evening 6pm – Introductions (and a beer) at the Peat Spade Inn bar. 7pm – ‘Saltwater Fly Fishers Dinner’ – 3 superb courses in the Mayfly Mess private dining room with Justin, Howard and Peter. After dinner presentation and slide show on ‘Saltwater fly fishing in the UK and Farther Afield’.
Justin Anwyl on UK bass and USA striped bass. Detailing target species, methods, understanding tides and feeding patterns, flies and associated fly fishing techniques.

Peter McLeod and Howard Taylor on International saltwater flyfishing… Destinations, methods, and how not to panic when you hook something enormous! Focusing specifically on bonefish, tarpon and the elusive permit.

Informal Q&A session. Bed and breakfast at The Peat Spade Inn and The Three Cups, Stockbridge. All transport arranged.

Saturday, 9am – Coffee at The Peat Spade Inn, followed by a morning looking at saltwater fly fishing techniques and tackle with Justin and Howard. As well as answering any specific questions you may have the session will include:
• The opportunity to try the very latest Hardy and Orvis saltwater fly fishing outfits.
• Casting in the wind – the single and double haul.
• Retrieving the fly to 'match the hatch' and get more hook ups.
• Setting the hook, playing and handling saltwater species.
• Boat etiquette – how to fish in a bonefish skiff and understand your guide efficiently and work as a team.
• Saltwater flies knots and rigging. Spinning rods and lures.
